Waterlily Trail

As the summer heat grows beneath a blazing sun, let us visit a marshland where the water flows and droughts aren't a worry. Here in lazy stream, waterlilies bloom in pink and reddish hues, catching the summer sun.

Rainy Autumn Stream

Autumn around here often brings cold rains as the season passes and summer fades to a memory. In a soggy clearing next to a wide stream, we watch the fiery autumn leaves rustle in the cold drizzle on a gloomy fall day.

Reflecting on Autumn

Along the shores of a slow-moving stream, fiery leaves of autumn glow on the trees on a clear, cool day. Their colors reflect in the water as the leaves fall like sparks, each slowly extinguished.

Plein Air Painting, Patapsco State Park

Yesterday, there was an interesting fine art workshop at Patapsco State Park. Ed Johnson, a local artist and retired teacher, taught this workshop at one of the large shelters near the swinging bridge. There were about a dozen artists there of varying backgrounds and experience levels. For a modest fee, all art supplies were provided, and everyone got to go home with a painting they created. Reference photos were provided, most of them of subjects in the park. It was a neat experience, and the first time I painted outdoors. It was an interesting challenge to paint without my standard art supplies, but it worked out. well, and hopefully Ed will run these events again in the future.

Flooded Fall Stream

It's been a rough year for flooding on the East Coast of the US; A few weeks ago, hurricane Matthew spread torrential rain through the southeast coastal regions, while here in central Maryland, flash flooding in the summer severely damaged most of the historic region of Ellicott City. Here, we see the fall colors begin to spread through the woods, as flood toppled trees are illuminated against the low sun.

Lazy River Driftwood

A lazy, clear spring river meanders along under the shade of tangled trees. Here and there, driftwood lies in the water, the only reminder of a harsh winter.

Glowing Summer Stream

Somewhere in the woods, in the shadow of sycamores, morning light blazes through the trees on a warm summer day.

Rolling Spring Clouds

Spring runoff fills a stream in the open plains while clouds roll overhead, casting shadows across the gnarled trees and endless grass.

Labor Day by the River

Here in the U.S., this is Labor Day weekend, a celebration of the working class and all the effort they have put into building this nation. So, it seems to me to be a good time to go for a walk in the woods to enjoy the meandering river and the late summer sun beneath the trees and on the drying grass. Work can wait for another time!

Natural Bridge, Virginia

Back in 2004 on our way to the Smoky Mountains, my brother and I visited the Natural Bridge of Virginia. This amazing wonder of the world is a classical subject for landscape painters - enjoy!
